Lumi was born in Bozeman, MT, (1997) but her parents moved to western South Dakota when she was young. They raised her in the Black Hills, where she developed her love for nature, which has greatly impacted her spiritual journey. Living with a forest in her backyard has been therapeutic and essential to her personal growth, she states that she “wouldn't be the person or artist today if it weren't for my hometown.”
From scribbling markers over her mother’s walls in her childhood to throwing paint at a canvas years later, she’s always found a way to express herself through a variety of artistic mediums. Lumi was raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota and remained in the area to earn her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Black Hills State University, which she obtained in May of 2021.
Through her studio practice, she focuses on creating compositions that reflect what is visible and invisible in the world, whether it exists in the past or the present, in reality, or just a manifestation of the mind.
Currently, she works heavily with collage and acrylic, but she also does photography, screenprinting, animation, and even poetry on the side from time to time. She believes the importance of creating is in the intention and the process more so than the media or even the product. She believes each medium has the ability to portray a different message, and, as an artist, it's a pleasure to explore the variety of compositions and concepts from one media to another. When she paints, she finds herself more focused on freedom of expression in contrast to her collage work.
The creative process for her is never the same, it morphs and adapts depending on a variety of factors. She’s even come to realize that a simple change in the weather or a slight swing in her mood will determine how she creates that day. Some days it's standing with a brush in hand in complete silence, other days she has a delicately curated agenda, but most days she creates rather intuitively.
